I like the term ‘mark making’ as you don’t know where initially the drawing is going to lead you.
I also like that it will be the unique signature by the artist who creates the original drawing.
Marlene Dumas says this about it: “I paint because I want to leave behind the trace of my touch.
The content of the painting can’t be separated from the feel of its surface.”
That is why working with pencil for me gives me that sense of both chaos and control leveraged later with watercolor for these contemporary art, figurative paintings.
